Is LEON Halal?

Is LEON halal certified?

No. LEON holds no halal certification in the UK and publishes no halal statement. The word "halal" does not appear on any leon.co page or in any LEON Foodie Fact Sheet from June 2020 to September 2026.

On 12 October 2026 the word "halal" was absent from all 452 pages in the leon.co sitemap, including all 85 restaurant pages and 172 menu item pages.

LEON's current Foodie Fact Sheet, issued on 16 September 2026, has a question headed "How can I find out more about your meat and fish sourcing?" It covers bacon, salmon, sausage and chicken. It does not mention halal anywhere in its 37 pages.

No UK certifier lists LEON either. A search for "leon" on the Halal Monitoring Committee (HMC) website returned "Nothing Found". HMC postcode searches near LEON Euston and the former Gildersome site in Leeds showed no LEON outlet. The Halal Food Authority (HFA) register could not be searched.

Confidence: high for LEON's own documents. Medium for the certifier check, because the certifier databases were only partly searchable.

Is LEON chicken halal?

LEON does not say its chicken is halal. Its fact sheet describes thigh meat from chickens that are "never caged", delivered fully cooked, with no halal, slaughter or stunning detail.

LEON uses chicken thigh, chargrilled or crispy (GFC nuggets and patties). The September 2026 fact sheet says "our chicken suppliers ensure that all our chicken is fully cooked before it arrives at our restaurants", and that its kitchens "do not handle raw or undercooked meat or seafood".

The June 2020 fact sheet listed "Red Tractor Chicken Thigh". Red Tractor is a UK farm assurance scheme, not a halal scheme. In June 2023 the leon.co food page said "We source from the UK", again with no halal wording.

No source states whether LEON chicken or beef is stunned before slaughter. That is unknown.

LEON has changed owners three times since 2021, and none of them announced a halal policy. The ownership history is on our page about who owns LEON.

Does LEON serve pork?

Yes. Nine items on the current LEON UK menu contain pork: eight breakfast items and one all-day wrap. The pork is bacon, Cumberland sausage and British pork chorizo.

LEON's own fact sheet is clear. "Our bacon is made using Red Tractor assured pork, smoked over beech wood." "Our Cumberland recipe sausage is made using RSPCA assured pork", in a natural hog casing. The chorizo is listed as "British Pork (92%)".

Most of the pork is on the LEON breakfast menu, served until 11am. The Vegan Sausage Muffin is labelled vegan on leon.co and is not on this list. After 11am, the one pork item is in the LEON wraps range.

Which LEON dishes have no meat?

LEON's vegan, vegetarian and fish dishes contain no meat. They are made in the same kitchens that cook bacon, sausage and chorizo, so none of them is kept apart from pork.

For every plant-based item, see our list of LEON vegan options. LEON's allergen page says "We handle all allergens in our kitchen and cannot guarantee an allergen-free environment." Pork is not an allergen, but it is cooked in those same kitchens.

Fish dishes include the Fish Finger Wrap (pollock), smoked salmon and hot-smoked salmon. Most scholars consider fish halal, but LEON makes no claim about these items. LEON's Peanut Satay contains fish sauce made from anchovy.

Cheese, gelatine and alcohol

LEON's halloumi uses "Vegetarian Rennet", and its feta and hard cheese use "Microbial Rennet". No gelatine appears in the September 2026 ingredient lists. No beer, wine or spirits appear on the menu.

The Chocolate Chip Cookie contains vanilla extract made with alcohol, and some sauces use wine, cider or sherry vinegar. Scholarly views on these differ, so check with your own scholar.

Has LEON ever said its meat is halal?

No. The only answer we found from LEON itself says the opposite. Around September 2019, LEON's account replied on TripAdvisor for LEON Euston: "None of our meat is Halal in our restaurants".

The full reply reads: "None of our meat is Halal in our restaurants but we do offer a variety of meals that cater for Vegetarians and Vegans." It was posted under LEON's own account (leonrestaurant). TripAdvisor blocks automated access, so the date comes from search engine listings and is not directly verified.

Confidence: medium. The reply is official in origin, but it is about seven years old.

No later statement exists. Every LEON fact sheet from 2020 to 2026 includes pork, and none mentions halal.

One anecdotal claim exists. In March 2022 an Instagram food account, on a hosted visit, said the Gildersome drive-thru in Leeds "is Halal". LEON never confirmed this, and the Gildersome page on leon.co now returns an error.

Why do other sites say LEON is halal?

Some halal directory sites say LEON's chicken comes from HMC or HFA certified suppliers and that LEON serves no pork. None of them cites a source, and LEON's own ingredient lists show pork on the menu.

These sites do not agree with each other. One names HMC as the certifier, another names HFA. One directory calls LEON "partially halal" on one page and "Needs Verification" on another. Others say halal status "varies by branch".

23 of the 43 LEON sites that remained after the May 2026 restructuring are franchised. There is no evidence that any franchise site sources halal meat.

How can you check before you order?

Ask the restaurant, and email LEON guest services at guesthappiness@leon.co for a written answer. LEON lists this address on its contact page.

1. Ask the team at the counter which items contain pork, and whether any meat is halal. Ask them to check, not guess.
2. Email guesthappiness@leon.co. Ask whether any LEON UK meat is halal certified and by which body, whether the chicken is stunned, and whether any franchise site sources differently. Keep the reply and its date.
